‘Tis So Sweet
Although hymns may be a bit old-fashioned for my generation, I have always loved them for their meaningful lyrics and the spiritual truths they convey. For as long as I can remember, “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” has been at the top of my list of favorite hymns. It has such a simple yet profoundly heartwarming message - Jesus is faithful. I can say that there is a certain level of joy and peace that comes when I place my trust in Jesus. This isn’t a fleeting feeling, like hearing an inspirational quote or a motivational speech that quickly fades from memory. No, this is a confident assurance that I belong to Jesus and that His promises are true!
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.” - 2 Corinthians 1:20-22 (NIV)
When we trust in Jesus for salvation, the Bible teaches that we receive the Holy Spirit as a deposit that guarantees our eternal relationship with God! Much like a down payment on a house, God gives us the Spirit as a promise of our inheritance - a heavenly home with our heavenly Father.
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” - Romans 8:14-16 (NIV)
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” - John 10:27-30 (ESV)
No matter what you go through in this life, you can enjoy the sweet, joyful assurance that comes from trusting in Jesus. When you give your life to Christ, He promises that nothing and no one can take you away from Him. You are adopted as a child of God and enter into a wonderful, life-changing relationship with your Creator. There is no greater joy in this life!
Remember when Paul said, “no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ”? That means that God is faithful to fulfill each and every one of His promises! The Bible says that not one word of God’s promises fails (1 Kings 8:56). With that in mind, here are just of few of God’s promises that you and I can always count on:
You Are Known By God
“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely…For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb…Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordaned for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” - Psalm 139:1-4, 13, 16 (NIV)
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” - Luke 12:6-7 (ESV)
Jesus Is Always With You
“Behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” - Matthew 28:20b (ESV)
Nothing Can Separate You From His Love
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?… No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:35, 37-39 (NIV)
No matter what you have done and no matter what you believe, you will always be known and loved by the God who created you! Jesus loved you enough to offer His life for you, paying the price for your sin so you wouldn’t have to. By placing your faith in Jesus, you can become a child of God! All it takes is a simple, genuine surrender to Him. During Jesus’ crucifixion, the thief on the cross next to Jesus simply said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus responded by saying, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:42-43). Do you want the assurance that you belong to Jesus? Simply surrender to Him, and enjoy the peace that comes from trusting in Him!
